The Investigation

The weather at Pirongia was warm and calm with no breeze. One of the investigators describes his feelings upon setting out. "I tried to minimise my expectations of encountering any paranormal activity on Mount Pirongia, even though I was aware of stories suggesting that Patupaiarehe/ may dwell there, and that they are particularly drawn to food offerings." They walked approximately 2 kilometers (about 30 minutes) along the track, taking numerous photos along the way using a DSLR camera outfitted with both ultraviolet and infrared lighting.

At one point, they stopped to sit in silence and tune in to the environment. They both acknowledged a strong sense of being watched and of not being welcome. They then decided to carry out an EVP session and ask questions. The investigators leading the EVP session introduced himself in Te Reo Māori and shared their pepeha (family story), along with a brief account of what they had done during the day. During the two investigators talking and sharing snacks, the wind suddenly picked up and the leaves began swirling violently around them. An investigator reassured whatever presence might be there, that they meant no harm and were only there to learn. Immediately the wind died down and stillness and the sense of being watched returned.

Personal Experiences

One of the investigators read out a karakia (prayer) they had written. As he spoke the words, he felt a sense of calm settle over the area. He has described it as if they were no longer seen as intruders, but rather now accepted as whomever was with them understood they were leaving soon.

A strong sense of being watched and unwelcome pervaded and followed the investigators for a great majority of their time investigating this area. One of the investigators witnessed a white mist like apparition while walking on one of the paths which just dissapated after a short time. A woman was also heard singing softly when there was no one present. This phenomena has been reported several times at this location by various people accoring to our case files.

Please note: While our organisation finds personal experiences of interest, it is our view that personal experiences alone do not constitude proof or evidence of paranormal phenomena.
