Karangahake Gorge
2024
The Karangahake Gorge is a area of stunning natural beauty and gold mining history with several walks that can be undertaken where you will stumble across old railway lines, mining cave's, gold mining machinery and battery stamping ruins. While no one can argue about how gorgeous the area is, the area does hold an eerie atmosphere. The beautiful Ohinemuri River runs throughout the Gorge making for a picturesque backdrop to what was once a thriving mining area. You can read the history on this location and it's alleged hauntings on our Haunted NZ Page.
The Investigation
A couple of interpid investigators from the Quantum team decided to complete a night walk through of the Gorge. This is their account of their investigation of some of this vast area.
The weather at Karangahake was calm — no wind, clear skies, a little bit cold, but overall a beautiful evening. Throughout the evening, we used a DSLR camera paired with a full light spectrum setup, including infrared and ultraviolet lighting, in an attempt to capture any visual anomalies.
Personal Experiences
Inside the 2km rail tunnel loop, near the bridge, one of the investigators saw a small bright light. It wasn’t a glow worm and they exclaimed it stood out unnaturally. As previously stated, there was a sense of being watched in various areas as well as moments of unease experienced by both investigators.
Please note: While our organisation finds personal experiences of interest, it is our view that personal experiences alone do not constitude proof or evidence of paranormal phenomena.
