Larnach Castle

Larnach Castle

April 2022

Since October 2021, our Case Manager had been working on an investigation of Larnach Castle and April 2022 saw that come to fruition.  It was a massive area to cover and we invited our friends at Haunted NZ along to join our North and South island teams for NZ's biggest investigation of a location with a total of 11 investigators in attendance!!!  Quantums Case Manager and Lead Investigator had investigated Larnach Castle many years previous and were looking forward to our repeat visit!  You can read the history on this location and it's alleged hauntings on our Haunted NZ page.

The Investigation

We were incredibly privileged to gain sole, full and unrestricted access to the Castle for a 6 hour period on the Monday evening.  To investigate such a large building fully, even with 11 investigators, was quite a daunting prospect so our Tech Manager had to ensure strategic placement of our static IR cameras for maximum coverage.  individual Investigators also utilised roaming IR and Full Spectrum video camera's.  The 11 strong team were split into smaller teams of 3 people each and sent off into various parts of the Castle to minimise noise contamination.  Even with this occuring and knowing from a previous investigation as to how the sound carries throughout the castle, regrettably noise contamination was still an issue from the perspective of capturing audio.

Each team had the opportunity to investigate all rooms of the castle in turn and we set up a Communications Base in the foyer for the evenings investigation so all the cameras were constantly monitored.  2 team members were situated there throughout the course of the investigation. It was a fairly quiet evening regarding any strange or potential paranormal occurences with most things being found to have a logical explanation. Although there was the bark of a dog clearly captured on an audio recorder which we found no explanation for. While it could be suggested that the noise came from outside of the castle, the grounds are locked when they castle closes for the evening so the chances of a dog getting on the grounds are pretty slim. See below for more on this incident!

Personal Experiences

In one part of the castle, the smell of dog was noticed by two different investigators on seperate occassions. It is interesting to note that the apparition of a man with a dog has previously been seen in the same area.

Another investigator when descending the stairs had the feeling of someone being right behind them, almost ensuring they were leaving. This occurred in an area of the castle that people have previously reported experiencing the same sensation.

Investigation Status: Ongoing
